I attended the launch meeting of Event Horizon in London today – the new collaborative association for businesses in the space industry. Interestingly the UK has a very strong global position in the world’s space industry particularly in the field of commercial applications, satellite technology and the associated supply chains.
Speaking to John Baker from the NS&RC at the event he explained that “to date large commercial organisations have often been the beneficiaries of government investment in the space and related sectors. The focus of Event Horizon is to support and encourage SMEs to collaborate and create an environment to assist these companies win larger value contracts. In addition to this Event Horizon will also inform and lobby government on how it could better utilise its investment into the space sector through collective intelligence, collaboration and winning new business opportunities.”
During the launch event a number of high quality presentations were made by Skyrora who are a satellite launch service provider and manufacturing business, and the government funded Space Catapult based at the space industry cluster in Harwell. Representatives from the systems integrator Sopra Steria who are an Executive member of the Event Horizon Programme were also present. Sopra Steria are a key partner of the programme and instrumental in driving forward the vision of transformational collaborative partnering and growth across the UK space sector. The event was hosted by the law firm Field Fisher at their prestigious offices in central London. Field Fisher are also an influential Executive member of the Event Horizon programme and a progressive force in supporting the UK space sector.
This is definitely a high growth sector to watch which will continue to leverage its significant expertise and technology that the UK currently possesses. The greatest opportunities are likely to come from the many hundreds of innovative SMEs that operate in this sector.
